Finding a Cure, Raising Awareness

I believe in making jewelry that allows the wearer to express their individuality, for the brave and the beautifully weird, for those unafraid to showcase their differences TO the world, who care to make a difference IN our world. That’s why I donate 10% of every order to the Cancer Research Institute (CRI), supporting cutting edge cancer immunotherapy research.

This cause is deeply personal to me. Nearly 30 years ago, I was diagnosed with early stage melanoma. My doctor’s words still echo: “What we did here today SAVED YOUR LIFE.” Since then, I’ve made it a ritual to stay vigilant, and recently, when my father was also diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma, his doctor prescribed immunotherapy, with a course of newly drugs approved shown to have very good results on his type of cancer. It was immunotherapy that shrank his tumor, sparing him from invasive surgery and debilitating radiation or chemotherapy. He has had very little side effects from the immunotherapy itself, and his current tests show no trace of cancer cells in his blood. Immunotherapy worked exceptionally well for him, although that’s not the case with everyone.

Immunotherapy harnesses the body’s own immune system to find and destroy cancerous cells, a breakthrough that has transformed treatment for many, though there’s still so much to learn. The expectation is that continued research will unlock more ways this treatment can be applied to other types of cancer.
